We all hold a beast inside. The only difference is what form it takes when freed.

Rain Ryland has never belonged anywhere, He’s used to people judging him for his rough background, his intimidating size, and now, his orphan status. He’s always been on the outside, looking in, and he’s fine with that. Until he moves to New Wurzburg and meets Friederike Burkhart.

Freddie isn’t like normal teen girls, though. And someone wants her dead for it. Freddie warns he’d better stay far away if he wants to stay alive, but Rain’s never been good at running from trouble. For the first time, Rain has something worth fighting for, worth living for. Worth dying for.

For all of us who have been going through paranormal/fantasy withdrawal ever since superheros took over our television sets and movie screens, Haven is the perfect paranormal fix.

In case you haven’t figured it out from the synopsis (or from other reviews), Haven is a story about werewolves, and I am so ready for supernatural creatures to be back in the YA book-world spotlight. This is the super sexy paranormal YA story that we’ve all been waiting for since the Twilight series ended. Readers will be howling #TeamRain by the end of this book. The male protagonist, Rain Ryland, is a complex, head-strong, empathy-inducing character. Imagine a dreamy synthesis of Edward Cullen and Jacob Black.

Here’s the short version of my review:

Sexy, Creepy, Action-packed.

Here’s the longer version that breaks down my three-word review:

First, Haven features an alpha-female protagonist named Freddie, who exudes confidence, raw-sexuality, intelligence, and a hint of delinquency. Rain, the male protagonist, mirrors these qualities, in addition to a more reflective and empathetic nature, qualities that heighten his curiosity about Freddie. Despite Rain’s bad-boy record, Freddie is the character with a chip on her shoulder. This creates a palpable tension between her and Rain that is nothing short of sexy.

The creepy feel of the novel is conjured by the mystical setting and dark aspects of the subplot. The story starts in Houston (H-Town represent!!!), then moves to Fredericksburg, Texas, the home of Enchanted Rock. The author uses wicked story-telling skills to weave in mythical folktales about Enchanted Rock with her characters and plot, to create a spooky and paranormal/supernatural storyworld. Multiple grizzly murders take place, and a few chapters are spent in a morgue discussing ritualistic killings that are said to prevent corpses from reanimating. So, yeah, the word creepy fits the bill here.

While Haven is full of steamy romance, character development, family drama, and high-school rivalries, there’s also a ton of wolf prowls, investigating, running from the cops, and intense fight-to-the-death scenes. All in all, Haven satisfies on multiple levels with a great balance between low-key and action-packed chapters.  Of course, as a native Texan and Houstonian, I have extra-love for this book. The use of Enchanted Rock as a story setting infused with magical and mythical properties was SO COOL.
