For eighteen year-old Gemma, life has never been normal. Up until recently, she has been incapable of feeling emotion. And when she's around Alex, the gorgeous new guy at school, she can feel electricity that makes her skin buzz. Not to mention the monsters that haunt her nightmares have crossed over into real-life. But with Alex seeming to hate her and secrets popping up everywhere, Gemma's life is turning into a chaotic mess. Things that shouldn't be real suddenly seem to exist. And as her world falls apart, figuring out the secrets of her past becomes a matter of life and death.

I discovered this series after finishing Obsidian, by Jennifer Armentrout. I was desperate to chase the first book in the Lux series with something that had romance, tension, and a Sci-Fi edge to it. Not surprisingly, Amazon came to the rescue. ” Your cart is empty, ” Amazon says. “Give it purpose,” Amazon says. So, of course, unable to ignore these desperate pleas to give my cart meaning any longer, I looked at the recommendations Amazon had for me after my most recent book purchase, and BAM! Just like that, my cart had purpose again. I saw the title The Fallen Star, and I was hooked. I loved the cover, and I loved the title, so who cares if I don’t love the actually story! I decided to skip the sample, and ordered it.

I’ll be honest here. The first few chapters reminded me of Twilight, and that’s not a bad thing, but I wanted something new and exciting. Once Jessica Sorensen moved the story and our characters out of the school setting, I fell in love. I was obsessed with the two MC’s,  Gemma and Alex, with a Bella-and-Edward-type intensity, and proceeded to tear through the book. I can’t go into more detail without including a big spoiler, but the whole concept of who Gemma is, and her relationship with Alex blew me away. It was so magical and unique. It was exactly what I was looking for.

The secondary characters, Aislin and Laylen are as complicated and intriguing as Alex and Gemma.  Aislin is Alex’s sister, and they both know something about Gemma that she doesn’t even know herself. Laylen’s character has an unexpected twist, and I found myself swooning over him almost as much as I was for Alex.

To make what could be a really, REALLY long review short, I’ll cut to the chase. I loved this book so  much, that I immediately read the ones that followed. I’m glad I bought this series while it still had the electric-eighties vibe to the covers. I’m not a fan of the new covers, but I’m sure you can still find some first editions out there. And trust me. You will want to after reading the first book. If you are a Jessica Sorensen fan, you already know that she did a New Adult version of  Gemma and Alex’s story, but I haven’t read it. The Young Adult version of this series hit the spot, and left me satisfied.

The magical realism, fantastical elements, paranormal aspects, sexual tension, and science fiction vibes all rolled into one,  made this book seem to pull off the impossible. Jessica seamlessly weaved together all of these elements to create an awesome, heart pounding, enjoyably chaotic world.

jAbout Jessica

I’ m the author of the Fallen Star Series, the Darkness Falls Series, the Death Collectors Series, and the New York Times and USA Today Best Seller, The Secret of Ella and Micha, a New Adult Contemporary novel.
I love writing and reading almost anything that is YA. Some of my favorite authors are Cassandra Clare, Sarah Dessen, Becca Fitzpatrick, Abbi Glines, Tammara Webber, Jamie McGuire and Jennifer L. Armentrout. I’ m also an avid watcher of TV series The Vampire Diaries and of Modern Family.
I absolutely love music. When I’ m writing, 9 out of 10 times I have music blaring in the background. My list of favorite songs could go on and on, since I have a very broad taste in music. But a few of my favorite bands are Chevelle, Rise Against, Alkaline Trio, Brand New, Death Cab for Cutie, Flight 409, Nirvana, and I’ m going to stop there or else I’ ll keep going on forever.
I don’ t really have any favorite movies, but a few that I could watch over and over again are Anywhere but Here, Juno, Pride and Prejudice, The Hangover, and Bad Teacher.
