"I've spent most of my life trying to make it to a future that still hasn't happened, or avoid a past that won't let me go. I don't remember when I've ever just stopped to live in the present, to hold on to the seconds I'm in."
Emma Thomas' s struggle with an abusive home life came to a heart-pounding conclusion in the final chapters of Reason to Breathe, the first installment of The Breathing Series— Rebecca' s Donovan' s bestselling romantic-thriller (USA Today). Now her secret life has been exposed, and her tormentor can' t hurt her anymore. Yet some are still haunted by that night. The bruises may have faded, but scars and fears, remain. How will she reclaim her life when she's barely breathing?
My thoughts…
This is book two in the Breathing Series. I really enjoyed it. It was a really quick read for me and I’m loving this series.
This book mainly focuses on the relationship between Emma and her mother Rachel. Emma wants to try and see if they can salvage their torn relationship before she heads off to college after she graduates.
Right from the beginning I couldn’t understand why Rachel wanted Emma to call her by her name and not mom. To say her mother has problems is a huge understatement. It seemed fitting that Emma call her Rachel instead of mom though because she was anything but a mother. The way she acted and treated Emma was horrible.
After all the things that Emma has been through you would think her mother would have made a better attempt at trying to mend their relationship. Instead she was selfish and mean. Obviously I didn’t care much for her. I think Emma deserved so much better.
While Evan and Sara are a part of this story they weren’t the main focus of it. I would liked for them to be more prominent in the story, but I understand why they weren’t.
There were a few situations within this one that I didn’t completely understand. It almost seems as though the relationship between Emma & Evan wasn’t what it was in the first book.
Within the pages of this book you will meet Jonathan. He’s Rachel’s younger boyfriend. He tells Rachel he’s 28, but really he’s only 24. He suffers from nightmare’s like Emma and they sort of connect a little bit. I liked him although I had a feeling something was up with him throughout the entire book. I couldn’t quite figure it out until all was revealed in the end.
Speaking of the end. Barely Breathing ends with a cliffhanger which is understandable since this is a trilogy. Thankfully the third and final book is out and I can start on it immediately.
Overall, I really liked this one and can’t wait to start the last book to see how things all turn out.
One more thing. There is a lot of underage drinking within this story. I’m not sure why Ms Donovan felt the need to include this. I suppose teenagers being teenagers.
