A man whose lifestyle is so different from her own… Nic Dalton' s cupcake bakery is thriving. She serves both rock stars and locals alike, content with her growing business. But one adventurous night out with her best friend, Bailey, turns her life upside down. She meets a handsome stranger who makes her skin sizzle and her heart race. Their one night together is explosive and unexpected, but when he has to suddenly leave without taking her phone number, Nic resigns herself to never seeing him again. …What will it take to trust and submit to his every desire? Matt Montgomery is one of Seattle' s finest. He works hard, loves and protects his family fiercely, and is loyal almost to a fault. And he has a penchant for bondage. Matt enjoys the way a woman looks wrapped up in his ropes, and makes no apologies for his preferences. When he meets Nic at a fetish festival, the small, beautiful woman catches his eye, drawing him to her. His one night with her was everything he' s ever looked for in a partner, but is cut short because of a family emergency. Even before he sees her again weeks later, he knows he' ll never get her out of his system. And he' ll do whatever it takes to make her his. “Give in to this, Nic. Let me prove to you that I will be one of the best decisions you ever make.” –Matt Montgomery
Erin’s Review… or is it a Rant?
Ok this will probably be more of a rant rather than a review. Also, this will contain spoilers so if you haven’t read the book yet..you might not want to read this until after you’re done with the book.
This book started out good and I did enjoy it for the most part. But you don’t really learn ANYTHING about Nic Dalton in this book. You only learn that she’s from Wyoming, isn’t really close with her family, owns her own bakery and has diabetes AND Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.. That’s it. You don’t learn anything about her family history that makes us understand why she’s the way she is..which is always needs to be in control of everything, and not to depend on other people, etc.. I mean, something had to have happened for her to turn out that way..but what? I guess we’ll never know..
Also, As someone who has PCOS herself, I was shocked to come across a character with the same condition I have. I thought I was going to totally relate with her on the PCOS thing…but I didn’t. With the exception of her having issues with her weight when she was younger. It doesn’t even seem like she has all the other fun stuff that comes with PCOS! For example, Hirsutism and Androgenic Alopecia. In simple terms BODY HAIR and thinning of your hair(on the head). It seems that the hair on your head decides to migrate to other parts of your body for some of us with PCOS and it SUCKS BALLS. Yes, I know that there’s worse things than dealing with body hair and going bald..but to most females, APPEARANCES ARE EVERYTHING. I’m not even going to go in to my rants about the joys of my pcos symptoms..it’s depressing enough as it is..I don’t need to dwell on it in a book review/rant post..
According to Nic she’s been advised NOT TO HAVE CHILDREN because of her PCOS. I have NEVER heard of anyone being told they SHOULDN’T have kids because of PCOS.. Most women with PCOS will have DIFFICULTY with conceiving without fertility help.. I have also never heard of someone having PCOS and Diabetes. If NIC has both of these, then she should definitely being taking medication. Which according to this book she is not on any sort of medication. You want to know what I’m supposed to be taking for my PCOS? GLUCOPHAGE (or Metformin). Which is what regulates Diabetics insulin levels. MY PCOS causes my body to produce TOO MUCH insulin, which in turns causes my body to make more testosterone than estrogen etc. So if Nic does have both PCOS and Diabetes, she should be taking something to regulate her insulin levels.
I might be wrong..maybe there are some people out there who shouldn’t have kids with their PCOS. I’ve just never heard of it and I always though maybe diabetes is something you end up having as a result of PCOS. I just didn’t know you could have both at once. I don’t have diabetes (yet) so it just seemed weird to me.
Alright well back to the actual book and story. I just think that this book was missing a lot of details.
Kristen didn’t really give us any explanation as to what Shibari is. I’m on wikipedia at the moment looking to see what kind of bondage it is. In case you’re wondering it’s Japanese Bondage. It looks like it’s really called Kinbaku and Shibari is just another word for it. Shibari (縛り) is a Japanese word that literally means “to tie” or “to bind”.
Like I said before there’s also not a whole lot of details about NIC and her past. In the other With Me in Seattle books I recall getting a little bit more background information on the characters. But in this book it seems to be missing. Oh well, overall it was an alright read but it’s definitely not my favorite book from this series. I hope that the next book in the With Me in Seattle series, Breathe With Me, will be better.
Erin – might I recommend Jay Wiseman’s THE EROTIC BONDAGE HANDBOOK (http://www.jaywiseman.com/MER_EBH.php ) or Midori’s THE SEDUCTIVE ART OF JAPANESE BONDAGE (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-seductive-art-of-japanese-bondage-midori/1004747883?ean=9781890159382) ? I can only wish Ms. Proby had read both, so she’d have a better grasp both on bondage techniques and what a Dom, even one head-over-heels in love with his newbie subbe, would actually behave like.
While I liked the book okay while I was reading it, thinking about it afterwards was a frustrating experience to me, or to anybody who actually knows anything about The BDSM Scene. I gather it description of the symptoms and consequences of PCOS was just as frustrating to you, since it doesn’t jibe with your experiences at all! Honestly, from the way Nic was carrying on earlier in the book, I fully expected it to turn out she’d gotten a back-alley abortion because she’d gotten knocked up as a teenager and didn’t dare ask her parents to sign a consent form so she could get a legal one, and was barren as a result.
You’re spot-on about us not knowing a thing about Nic’s backstory, really – or from this book, all that much about Matt’s! If I hadn’t read SAFE WITH ME right after this one, I would have thought he cruising dangerously close to Nice Guy(TM) territory – and I would have been willing to believe he just claimed to be a police detective, since we see almost nothing about his life as one.
I would love to read a good bondage romance – sadly, this book wasn’t it.
Yeah, this book is totally lacking compared to the other books in the series. I was hoping it would be more interesting with the bondage happening..but it just did nothing… fifty shades was better!! hahah Oh well. :/ I hope the next book in the series is better.
Thanks for your suggestions and comments! 😀
I wasn’t that taken with FIFTY SHADES, Erin – but yes, I expected TIED WITH ME to be much better than it was. Matt seems like an interesting character from other places, and I feel like Nicole could be one as well if we knew a thing about her! I’d love to see some more stuff about these two as a couple, and see them better developed….
I also meant to say in my last comment that this feels like it was originally a longer book, and that stuff was cut out – like some of Nic’s backstory, and what Matt was doing during those times he was off being a cop. Oddly, I would still love to read The Further Bondage Romance Adventures of Matt and Nicole – I do feel there’s something there, though Ms. Proby needs to start going to a few actual BDSM clubs or play parties to get a better idea of what’s going on….
I have each one of these books in this series and although this one is laking from the others that is not whatbothers me. Along the same line as the pcos rant, I have a rant about the diabetes. I have type 1 diabetesand this bookread by many people is now further spreading the incorrect information regarding this disease. I’m going to assume that nichas type 1 diabetes for several reasons she says many times that she has it for years and she “used” to be on meds. Type 1 diabetes is diagnosed in people uder the age of 31 (giveor take a few years, I cant remember the exact number at this moment). Your pancreas which produces insulin to regulateyour blood sugars with out you even giving it a second thougnt simply stops producing it. There is no way to only control it with diet and excersise. Insulin is a life sustaining need. You can’t even have “crashed” with your sugars going low and expect to eattwo turkey sandwiches amd two glasses of oj. Your blood sugar would go too high makng you feel terrible moody and in most cases have very little in the sex drive department. She never even checked it to see how low she was, she only checks in the morning. Completely rediculous. Also she is further promoting the fact the taking insulin as a diabetic when you eat a cupcake, for example,is ” cheating”. It is not cheating when a healthy non diabetic eats one,why is it when a diabetic eats it, it is wrong. Just because you see us take insulin for it instead of a healthy pancreas doing it on its own. We have to be our own pancreas and we may work harder at that. I’m really annoyed also that she was told not to have kids.I have had diabetes for 12 years amd am currently pregnant with my seck d child. My first,a now healthy and bright 4 year old,is sleeping in the next room. Although pregnancy is harder because xof blood sugar control its not impossible. ,any diabetics have children. I wish she,as author, would have done her research on diabetes before writing about it. And let’s just say I’m off base here and nic has type two diabetes which can be controlled by diet and excersise and your pancreas still produces Isulin. Your still not going to only check once a day, your not going to not have a low blood sugar only once in a few years, and you are still not going to eat what she did and not feel like shit after wards.ugh. if she does have type 2 and not type 1 than Kristen should have made note of that. There is a huge movemnt right now with the JDRF to make type. 1 diabetes #typenone because there is such a misconseption regarding it out there.I plan on writing a message to the author when its not 3am
Ugh I’m sorry there are many typing errors in that post. My nook does not have the best keyboard in the world.
Wait – Type 1 Diabetes, Erin? Great Merciful Goddess – my niece has that, and you’re right that it can’t be controlled by diet and exercise alone!
I think my brain must have filled in “Type 2”, which my brother has. Because I’m pre-diabetic, I know you can control that with diet and exercise – I’ve been doing it for the last four-five years, though not as obsessively as Nic does!
There’s a lot of stuff here it sounds like Ms. Proby didn’t research very well, isn’t there? I realize the “With Me” series is something she knocks out in a hurry (most of the books have a 2013 or 2014 copyright), but you’d think if she didn’t want to do that much research she’d have picked things she knew better.
